Mistral AI is Europe’s leading AI lab, headquartered in Paris. It publishes open-weight models and commercial models, with a clear emphasis on efficiency, on code and on European regulatory compliance. For teams that need their data to stay in Europe, it is usually the first choice.

The models

  • Mistral Small: fast and cheap, for narrow tasks.
  • Mistral Medium: the balance; it is the model Tably proposes by default.
  • Mistral Large: the most capable in the commercial line, for reasoning and planning.
  • Codestral: specialized in code, very good for completing and refactoring.
  • Open models (the Mixtral family and its successors) that you can run locally with Ollama.

What sets it apart

Privacy and data residency

Mistral offers processing in Europe and contractual terms designed for regulated companies. If your project handles health, financial or European citizens’ data, that is a weighty argument for the CTO.

Efficiency

Its models tend to be smaller and faster than the equivalents from other labs for similar quality. That lowers latency and cost.

Code

Codestral is a serious model for programming, and Medium and Large write clean code. For an API builder on medium-sized projects, Mistral is a competent option.

Multilingual

It performs very well in French, Spanish, German and Italian, with less bias toward English than other models.

Where not to use it

  • Frontier reasoning: Large is good, but Claude Opus, GPT or Gemini Pro outperform it on long, open-ended problems.
  • Vision: most variants do not process images; to describe references, use Gemini or GPT.
  • Debate with personality: its style is restrained; if you want a council with some spark, add a Grok.

What role to give it on your team

  • CTO on regulated projects: when data residency is a requirement.
  • Head of Engineering: Large. Clear plans, good recommendations on European infrastructure.
  • API builder: Medium or Codestral for medium-sized projects.
  • QA: Small, fast and cheap.

How to connect it in Tably

Enter your Mistral API key under “Models and API keys”. Tably uses its compatible endpoint, available for any role and as a builder.

Costs

Low-to-mid range. Small is very cheap; Large sits in the mid range, below the premium models.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mistral comply with European data regulation? It offers processing options in the European Union and compliance documentation. Verify the current terms for your case.

Does Codestral work as a builder? For small and medium-sized apps, yes. For long builds, desktop agents still have the advantage.

Can I run Mistral on my machine? Its open models, yes, with Ollama. Quality depends on your hardware.

In summary

Mistral is the option for teams with European privacy requirements and for anyone who wants efficiency without sacrificing quality. Give it the technical seat on regulated projects and try it as a builder on medium-sized projects.
