Gemini is Google’s family of models. It has two traits that make it very useful on a team of agents: it sees images extremely well and it handles enormous contexts at a low cost. At Tably Team we use it a lot wherever those two things matter.
Pro and Flash
| Model | Profile | When to use it in Tably |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini Pro | The most capable in the family; deep reasoning, very long contexts | Head of Engineering, CTO, analysis of extensive documentation |
| Gemini Flash | Fast, very cheap, multimodal | Describing screenshots of reference apps, quick QA, summaries, Product on small projects |
Tably proposes Flash by default for Google because, for most roles, its quality-to-price ratio is hard to beat.
What sets it apart
Top-tier vision
When you give Tably reference apps, the system visits them with a real browser and takes screenshots. A model with vision describes each screen: hierarchy, components, palette, navigation patterns. Gemini is one of the best options for that task: it describes precisely, catches interface details and does it at a very low cost.
Long contexts
If your project comes with extensive documentation (a hundred-page specification, a process manual, an existing repository), Gemini Pro can hold all of it in context and reason about it without intermediate summaries.
Speed and price
Flash responds very quickly. In a council of six agents over several turns, that shortens the debate noticeably, and the cost per turn is among the lowest on the market.
Integration with the Google ecosystem
For a Head of Engineering proposing Google Cloud services, Firebase or Google APIs, Gemini knows that ecosystem in detail.
Where you should not use it
- Code for a long build: Gemini writes correct code, but for operating on a repository of dozens of files we prefer Claude Code or Codex.
- Strict design replicas: like GPT, it tends to contribute ideas of its own when you asked for fidelity.
- Roles that require saying “no”: Gemini tends to be conciliatory in the debate; if you want a CTO who pushes back on the CEO, Claude or DeepSeek argue more.
Which role to give it on your team
- Head of Engineering: Pro. Detailed build plans and good infrastructure recommendations.
- Reference description: Flash. It is our usual choice for the vision model.
- Product or QA on small projects: Flash. Fast, cheap, sufficient.
- CTO: Pro, especially if the project comes with a lot of documentation.
- Design: acceptable; its reading of screenshots helps describe references, but for writing the design system we prefer Claude.
How it connects in Tably
Add your Gemini API key (Google AI Studio) in “Models and API keys”. Tably talks to Gemini through its compatible endpoint, so any role can use it and it can also be a builder via API.
Costs
Flash is among the cheapest models available; Pro sits in the mid-to-high range. Google usually offers a generous free quota to get started, which makes Gemini a good first API for trying Tably without spending anything.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gemini good for coding? Yes, especially Pro. But for complete builds the agent matters as much as the model, and there Claude Code and Codex have the edge.
Is Flash too small for a council role? No. For Product or QA on an MVP, it performs very well. For CTO on a large project, step up to Pro.
Can I use Gemini to look at my reference screenshots and Claude to build? That is exactly how we use it.
In short
Gemini is the model of eyes and long memory: put it to work reading references and documentation, give it engineering when the project comes with a lot of context, and take advantage of Flash for everything that has to be fast and cheap.
